Rehabilitation of the veranda at The Argyle, a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark.
Originally built in 1859 as the headquarters for a local ranch, The Argyle evolved from its modest homestead origins to an arsenal, and then to a hospitality venue made famous for its food by the 1940 publication of the Argyle Cook Book. It now serves as a fine dining and social club in support of the Texas Biomedical Research Institute.
As a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark, the building is under continual upkeep. Rehabilitation of the veranda began with analysis of existing conditions through inspection, probing, and photographic archiving. Selective demolition and rebuilding was proposed for the columns, balustrade, deck, and entry stairs to replace degrading material. Repairs were executed in alignment with the existing building elements, returning the veranda to safe use while incorporating current best building practices and the historic architectural character.
