A tradition-oriented refresh of the main library serving Castroville and the surrounding Medina County.
The City of Castroville, along with many other areas in Texas, has experienced tremendous growth. As part of an effort to expand municipal facilities and services to the greater Medina County area, a renovation of the Castroville Public Library was studied.
The overall footprint expands toward the west of the site to take advantage of underutilized building area. A programmatic update introduces new administrative offices, classrooms, and more generous stack space and reading areas. In alignment with local design ordinances requiring traditional Alsatian architectural character for all municipal development, several updates to the form are proposed. The roof pitch is adjusted and carries a shingled finish in a diagrid pattern — as a public-facing and public-serving program, the library should read as communal rather than utilitarian architecture. Exposed wood trusses speak to the Alsatian tradition, as do the dormers, which also admit more natural light for an improved interior experience.
