Two ornate sculptural lanterns stand as welcoming sentinels to the City of San Antonio Headquarters.

Two sculptural sentinels greet visitors at the entry to City Tower and light its front facade. Walking the east–west corridor along Houston Street, the light crescendos into forms that take cues from trees of life and candelabras.

The lamp posts are cast in a Pecos Red–inspired terracotta-dyed blend using crushed terracotta ceramic from local clay — a color familiar from the Pecos Red sandstone used in regional building, and from chili itself. It sets the work in conversation with San Antonio's iconic reds: the Central Library, Ruby City, and the Torch of Friendship. Hand-formed steel vines wrap each post, referencing the Art Nouveau metalwork of historic urban landscapes and set against the Brutalist architecture of City Tower behind. Yucca blossoms carry the light — the plant's spikes protect a bloom that withstands intense sun — while Queen's Wreath, a drought-tolerant vine common on San Antonio houses, draws the butterflies that still migrate through the city. Like them, people are drawn to San Antonio's City Lights.
